Before the comet comes, we have a window of opportunity. A solar eclipse is coming. The sun will be entirely blocked out by the moon, and the fire benders will be helpless. That’s the day we need to invade the Fire Nation, the Day of Black Sun.
On the Day of Black Sun, Avatar Aang led the invasion force into the Fire Nation in hopes of defeating the Fire Lord before Sozin's Comet could appear.[/url][/center][/blockquote]
They failed.
Though they thought they had the element of surprise, the Fire Nation knew they were coming, and they were ready for them. In the battle that ensued, both the Avatar and Katara were captured. With two of their key fighters gone, morale quickly fell in the invaders' ranks. As they regained their bending, the Fire Nation cut off the route to escape and rounded up those left behind as the youngest fled on Appa to the closest place outside the Fire Nation, the Western Air Temple.
Meanwhile, Zuko had confronted his father at last and went to join the Avatar, only to discover he was too late. Just as he left the Fire Nation, Aang was placed in the prison that had held Iroh the day before. Out of desperation, Sokka and Toph accepted him into the group. After all, who better to help them take down the Fire Nation than the prince himself?
